This review reports the recent advances in food packaging technologies as tools to satisfy consumer and food industry principal demands, as food tracing in every stage of the supply chain and food quality and safety assurance. Both the latest and the most consolidated applications have been reported in the areas of intelligent and active packaging technologies. Reasons and constrains of present commercial implementation scarcity, especially in the European market, are also commented.
