Objective The aim of this study is to assess attitudes, knowledge and behaviours of a sample of young non-professional players relating to doping and dietary supplements. Methods The survey analyzes data from a cross-sectional study accomplished through the administration of a questionnaire to non-professional soccer players from three Italian provinces of residence (Frosinone, Napoli e Cagliari). Descriptive analysis was carried out through the calculation of absolute and relative frequencies. Univariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test. Results Eighty players were included. For 88,8% of responders is important to win in sport, 55% consider essential to win at all costs while 45% declare the contrary. Among those who have suffered injuries during sports, 93,8% believe that to win in sports is important (p=0,003), compared to 66,7% who did not have injuries. About 32,5% consider doping an illegal practice, which is widespread only among professionals for 28,8% or present at all levels for 22,5%. Regarding supplements utilization, 45% had never made use of branched chain amino acids or creatine, while 27,5% claim to have taken both. According to the sample, to become a top level athlete an individual predisposition (41,3%), an adequate preparation (32,5%) and anabolic steroids (26,3%) are required. Conclusions Regarding the knowledge of the players on doping and the use of nutritional supplements, alarming misinformation emerged from the present study. Educational programs involving schools and families are needed, also through the work of various professional figures and healthcare workers, specific and targeted intervention programs could be realized.
