Anamorphosis is a method of representation which takes advantages of the the perspective laws in order to obtain a deformed image that appears in its true shape only when viewed from a certain point. The catoptric anamorphosis instead use the mirror as a “decoder”, taking advantage of the reflection laws (the image must be seen reflected). The interest in this representation type reached its peak in the seventeenth century, it becomes awere of its strong evocative power; so that the term ‘anamorphosis’ appeared for the first time in the Gaspard Schott’s treaty, Magia Universalis Naturae et Artis (1657-1659) under the name of ‘Magia Anamorphotica’. Also today, in a world dominated by virtual reality, in a way that mimics all kinds of immersive environments and situations, anamorphosis remains one of the few “analogical” representations that is able to inspire wonder. The interest in anamorphosis has been revived since the 30s of last century, but the studies and experiments carried out so far, nationally and internationally, do not deviate from geometric patterns set by historical treaties, furthermore are limited to the art field (such as the example given by Istvan Orosz or Stella Battaglia and Gianni Miglietta) and in recreational-didactic applications with rare, if not unique, architecture transpositions (such as the achievements of swiss Felice Varini or Truly Design studio), which are helping to ease the impact of perception and linear anamorphosis. The research is based on the study of the both optic and catoptric anamorphosis construction processes which are exposed in the seventeenth century major treaties (re-illustrated and critically compared) in order to re-propose the setting in a virtual environment of a common 3D application. The focus of the research is to identifying a digital system that will define this type of performance – in which the processing of projection and section, properly controlled, are completely independents – so that allows extensions and variations of elements. Moreover it allows for possible experimentation in architectural applications of digital anamorphosis. The research, in the context of studies aimed at the descriptive geometry renewal, it is proposed to update the anamorphic representation and transpose it into a digital space to be able to experiment with applications, strictly controlled, in geometric and architectural field.

Lo stato dell’arte sulla teoretica e sull’applicazione pratica della rappresentazione anamorfica, concentrata principalmente nel settore artistico, evidenzia, infatti, la mancanza di un approfondimento delle sue basi tecniche e geometriche tanto che essa è stata impostata, persino nelle sue elaborazioni digitali, sugli stessi sistemi costruttivi definiti dalle trattazioni seicentesche. La presente ricerca pone le sue basi proprio su tale constatazione e, analizzando in dettaglio le opere ritenute emblematiche sull’argomento, si concentra sui procedimenti geometrici che ne hanno portato alla definizione. Il loro studio, puntuale, prevede la re-illustrazione bi e tridimensionale dei problemi nello spazio digitale e la loro contestuale verifica. Lo scopo è quello di pervenire non solo ad una sistematizzazione delle fonti e dei metodi ma anche ad un reale innovamento nell’ambito di questo tipo rappresentazione. L’evoluzione tecnica che il settore della progettazione architettonica - così come tutti gli altri campi - ha subito negli ultimi decenni con l’immissione sul mercato di innovativi strumenti digitali di grafica, modellazione e visualizzazione, ha comportato, nello specifico, un rinnovamento dei processi, dei metodi e dei sistemi di analisi, sviluppo e ricerca in tutti i settori inerenti l’architettura. Questo dà la possibilità di costruire modelli virtuali e di compiere tridimensionalmente azioni di proiezione e sezione nello spazio digitale che la pratica tradizionale non poteva risolvere col solo impiego della riga e della squadra. La ricerca si pone l’obiettivo di individuare un sistema digitale per la determinazione di questo tipo di rappresentazioni - in cui l’elaborazione delle operazioni di proiezione e sezione, debitamente controllate, è del tutto automatica -, per prevedere poi estensioni e varianti dei diversi elementi di concorso e per sperimentare poi possibili applicazioni architettoniche dell’anamorfosi digitale.
