Aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of environmental conditions on human reproductive behavior in the highest industrialized countries. On the one hand, we will document the biological effect of pollution on fecundity and reproductive health of women and men; on the other hand, we will discuss the hypothesis that individuals fearing for a foreseen unhealthy environment tend to delay childbearing or give up having children, thus contributing to a reduced ecological footprint. Both these effects could result in further fertility reduction or limited recovery in the years to come.

Abstract
Aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of environmental conditions on human reproductive behavior in the highest industrialized countries. On the one hand, we will document the biological effect of pollution on fecundity and reproductive health of women and men; on the other hand, we will discuss the hypothesis that individuals fearing for a foreseen unhealthy environment tend to delay childbearing or give up having children, thus contributing to a reduced ecological footprint. Both these effects could result in further fertility reduction or limited recovery in the years to come.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
