The development of Phonological Awareness (PA) skills, Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN), Rapid Naming and Vocabulary between the ages of 5 and 7 was examined in a cross-sectional design on Italian children (N = 497). Separate effects of schooling and age were also investigated. Results indicated that Phonological Awareness and Naming skills globally improved linearly with age in the time interval considered. However, once formal teaching of literacy began, the ability to manipulate syllables in spoken words showed a remarkable enhancement. Conversely, RAN and Vocabulary skills were influenced by age effects only.

Abstract
The development of Phonological Awareness (PA) skills, Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN), Rapid Naming and Vocabulary between the ages of 5 and 7 was examined in a cross-sectional design on Italian children (N = 497). Separate effects of schooling and age were also investigated. Results indicated that Phonological Awareness and Naming skills globally improved linearly with age in the time interval considered. However, once formal teaching of literacy began, the ability to manipulate syllables in spoken words showed a remarkable enhancement. Conversely, RAN and Vocabulary skills were influenced by age effects only.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
