Oxygen/methane propellant combination has recently gained interest for space propulsion as proved by the inclusion of its study in the European Community 7th Framework Program (FP7) project “In-Space Propulsion 1” (ISP-1). In the rocket engine design phase, the different available options for thrust chamber cooling have to be studied. In this framework, the thermo-fluid dynamic analysis of film-cooled thrust chambers is one of the necessary steps for the reliable development of liquid rocket engines. In the present study, thrust chamber film cooling efficiency is analyzed by means of a multi-component Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations solver. After validation of the simplified approach against available data for oxygen/hydrogen thrust chambers, a preliminary numerical study of the oxygen/methane film-cooled thrust chamber which will be tested in the ISP-1 project is carried out.
