This thesis approaches the rituality of the Otomí people of the Sierra Madre Oriental in the state of Hidalgo (Mexico) from a spatial and relational perspective. Starting with the body, a concept widely studied in the ethnographic literature of the region, the proposed approach considers the body in space, tracing the network of multiple relationships that it constructs in social life and with the collective of non-humans. By analysing the ritual space and the dynamics that guide each performance, a complex system of interactions emerges – between human beings, objects and invisible entities – which is the very foundation of the reproduction of vital processes.

Abstract

This thesis approaches the rituality of the Otomí people of the Sierra Madre Oriental in the state of Hidalgo (Mexico) from a spatial and relational perspective. Starting with the body, a concept widely studied in the ethnographic literature of the region, the proposed approach considers the body in space, tracing the network of multiple relationships that it constructs in social life and with the collective of non-humans. By analysing the ritual space and the dynamics that guide each performance, a complex system of interactions emerges – between human beings, objects and invisible entities – which is the very foundation of the reproduction of vital processes.
