Introduction: Currently, there is a limited body of literature exploring the connection between sexting and value orientations. However, existing studies indicate an association between specific values and risky behaviors among adolescents and young adults. For instance, high scores on openness to change, especially in hedonism, and self-enhancement have been linked to risky sexual activity and aggressive behaviors. Aims and Methods: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between various sexting behaviors (i.e., experimental sexting, non-consensual sexting, sexting under pressure, risky sexting) and 53personal values defined according to the Schwartz model in a group of adolescents and young adults. The research comprised 719 participants aged 14 to 21 years (Mage = 16.82; SDage = 1.59), who were recruited from various high schools and universities in Rome, to complete an online survey including the Portrait Values Questionnaire and the Sexting Behavior Questionnaire. Results: A series of MANOVA analyses revealed that each type of sexting was associated with increased endorsement of values linked to openness to change (hedonism and stimulation) and self-enhancement (power and achievement), while showing decreased alignment with conservation (conformity) and self-transcendence values (universalism). Sexting under pressure also demonstrated a stronger connection with the importance attributed to traditional values. Additionally, notable moderation effects based on age and gender were observed. Conclusion: Our results reveal that sexting behaviors among young people correlate positively with hedonism and power, while showing a negative correlation with conformity and universalism. Our findings carry significant implications for educational and preventive interventions aimed at adolescents and young adults. For example, this could involve promoting responsible and mindful internet use, along with awareness of the potential risks associated with sexting. Furthermore, interventions should encourage values that counteract power dynamics within relationships and challenge gender stereotypes.
