Through the Inapp-Plus survey, the article sheds light on the phenomenon of platform work in Italy, focusing on the possible risks related to development in this area of in-work poverty. We first describe the development of this economic sector and the role of the algorithm in radicalising a dynamic already experienced in Lean production. After that, we analyse the latest available Inapp survey data. In addition to the fundamental characteristics of dig-ital workers, we analyse the formality/informality of employment relationships, the dynamics of payment and ac-count management, the methods of evaluating and monitoring work activities, and the workers’ economic and social status. In summary, informal work and discrimination practices still represent open issues and expose workers to the abovementioned risks. Finally, the article focuses on the Italian legal framework and its controversial enforce-ment in the light of the Inapp data, underlining the role that the recently adopted proposal for a European Di-rective could play in the future.
