Annibale Carracci e i tempi dell'istoria: il possibile ruolo di Giovanni Battista Agucchi

In his Lives published in 1672 Giovan Pietro Bellori analyzed the mechanism of anachronism adopted by Annibale Carracci in the Camerino Farnese frescoes to narrate time in painting. Im portant and diverse attempts to address that problem are recognizable in Annibale’s work, and in a masterpiece of his maturity, the 'Perseus and Phineus' fresco on one of the short walls of the Farnese Gallery (c. 1603), he experimented with a solution that would later be developed, in various declinations, by his heirs of later generations, notably Domenichino and Poussin. It is possible that as early as the mid-1590s Annibale was refecting on this theme, having as his interlocutor also Giovanni Battista Agucchi, who would later carry on the same discourse by acting as Domenichino’s iconographic adviser for the memorable 'Hunting of Diana' (Rome; Galleria Borghese).
