The essay deals with the relationship between digital and territory starting from an interpretive framework related to systems theory. Given an analysis of the challenging expansion/intensification of interactions digitally mediated by centralised infrastructures and geomedia increasingly reshaping local systems and affecting socio-spatial practices, as well as of a few case studies related to territorial practices of ‘social mapping’, its focus moves on from an assessment of the transformative effects of the ICT “superstructure” to an evaluation of possible alternatives focused on the creation of ‘community informatics’ based on social mapping.
