The world is in continuous evolution, metamorphosing constantly. Worldwide trends such as globalisation, tech-nological revolution, migration, transnational and transcultural communication, international travel, and the global economic crisis are driving swift and constant social changes. In this scenario, arise the need to place com-munities at the centre of a new sustainable design processes. This paper is about the new approaches of ecomuseums in a globalised world and their concrete implications with respect to the needs of communities, in pursuit of a balance between protection of local identity, enhancement, and sustainable development. Different aspects characterise the close relationship between ecomuseums, and the man-agement of World Heritage Sites. The specificities emerge from an analysis of the activities and good practices that the international ecomuseal movement promotes for the enhancement of local identities and for sustainable development.

Abstract
