To date, very little is known about the underlying causes and mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of ectopic pancreas. Heterotopic pancreatic tissue is most commonly defned as pancreatic tissue located outside the pancreatic gland in the lack of vascular or anatomical continuity with the pancreas. Schultz et al. frst described heterotopic pancreas in 1727, and afterward, Klob and colleagues provided its histological confirmation.
