The Rione Esquilino is an integral part of UNESCO’s Site "Historic Center of Rome, extraterritorial properties of the Holy Seat and St. Paul outside the walls”. It consists of an archaeological area of great value, as well as a highly prized neighborhood that today houses a population of residents, unlike the rest of the Rome’s historic center, enriched, but also burdened, by a varied population. The presence of the Termini Station, with its imposing function as a place of exchanges of all kinds, renders Esquilino a multiethnic and pluricultural place. The Rione draws exceptional energies from the encounter - or clash - of interests, resources, hardships, fragilities and excellences, but also much of the conflicts that characterize the daily dynamics of the community: for this reason, it expresses a huge complexity within the complexity of Rome. The research-action "Esquilino chiama Roma” participated by public and private entities joined in a convention with Municipality I, develops an integrated and participatory approach, based on the sharing of experiences, studies and projects aimed at facilitating cooperation between active citizen-ship, research centers and institutions, in the aim of breaking down fences that separate neighboring albeit dispersed worlds. This paper illustrates the convention and the research-action on the territory carried out in the past five years.
