At the intersection between a biographical and a historiographical approach, this interview retraces salient moments and aspects of the history of gender and media studies in Italy from the perspective of the sociologist who was the pioneer in this field. The fruitful but not taken for granted encounter between feminism and sociology, the late and still unfinished process of academic legitimation, the encouraging signs of a resurgence of attention in recent years, are underlined by M.B. who also insists on the peculiarly feminist intention of contributing to change through the production of knowledge. The hope for a re-orientation of the Italian scholarship towards audience research and the multiple expressions of female agency in the media field closes the interview.
