The text introduces the “research and methods” session of Urban Morphology. He points out some fragments of path research, improved in Italian University since the second half of the 1950s, starting from those Muratori arguments that unwittingly he offered to academic reflec-tion. Aymonino and Rossi, collected the baton, reach at different design suggestions. Rossi gives geographers as to Muratori the cred-it for having developed an important descriptive system, which represent “the raison detre” of the settlement, but he also him attributes the mistake of having unexplored the perspectives of the glimpsed structure rules” (Rossi, 1995). What is – Rossi seems to suggest – the form that we must and can draw? Caniggia seems to take out, by the concept of “synchronical variant” of the building type and by the studies for the reconstruction of Venzone, a first response to the question. He distinguished the reversible form from the irreversible, that he recognise into the transformation process of ur-ban form, and he proposes on one hand a rebuild the original form and on the other hand a new mediate design. Several papers offered for the February 2020 study day once again put the terms of the ques-tion posed by A. Rossi: what is the project; that we can take out from the deep understanding of the urban storytelling and that suggests to us the synopsis of the urban fabric. Solution that sometimes we can gain by re-construction of physical memory and by place identity (where it was and how it was), other times, instead, finding by mediation in between the heritage process and contemporary require-ments the suggestions for architectural design. The formal solution that has to be able to re-es-tablish the necessity link between the formal in-herited presences and the new urban necessary structure.
