In this article I deal with some of the possible causes for the scarcity of archaeological evidence for Mesopotamian statues. I analyse the reasons for such a gap in antiquity, from the insufficiency and reuse of material to the destruction of statues. I consider the displacement and hiding of statues through the practices of godnapping and burial as well. In the conclusion, I discuss the destruction and disappearance of ancient statues in modern times, from archaeological excavations to cases of iconoclasm.

Abstract
In this article I deal with some of the possible causes for the scarcity of archaeological evidence for Mesopotamian statues. I analyse the reasons for such a gap in antiquity, from the insufficiency and reuse of material to the destruction of statues. I consider the displacement and hiding of statues through the practices of godnapping and burial as well. In the conclusion, I discuss the destruction and disappearance of ancient statues in modern times, from archaeological excavations to cases of iconoclasm.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
