The study aims to use different analysis techniques and methodologies, from Digital photogrammetry surveying to digital handmade sketches, to decompose the volume and the geometry for a scientific data catching that permit to rediscover a roman modernist heritage that is underestimated and not properly protected, trying to define a common expressive way and how it's structured and evolved during a century.

Abstract

The case of study is a roman residential building site in north part of Rome, precisely at Largo Nicola Spinelli, next “Villa Borghese” park. The neigh borough is wealthy and composed by a lots of buildings made in different periods links each others, for the majority, by a neoclassical or liberty style. That “Palazzina” was built in 1954 in a particular period of roman architecture. In fact the architectural panorama was researching the new prototype of roman house, identifying that type of building like a brand new one, perfect for roman post war reconstruction. Usually, The “Palazzina” it's structured by 3 or 4 plans in elevation with 3 or 4 apartments for floor and a huge loft on the rooftop. At the entry, a quite small garden all around describes the volume and isolates the building from the others. The main goal of these years was to create an architectural style in a one specific expressive way , recovering the cultural heritage made before the second world war and reconnecting with new vanguards of that decade. Ugo Luccichenti, the Architect, had an important role in Italian architectural panorama, in particularly in Rome, between the 30s and 60s. He found his major professional expression realizing several residential buildings, as “palazzinas”, some of them really important for the architectural scene of Italy's capital. He started his career in 1935 with the construction of “Palazzina in via Panama” , but during fascist era and in particularly during the war, he didn't agreed and took part at all to the political life, for that reason, maybe he didn't built any public buildings in these years, but he was really active in architectural research, especially in international panorama, first of all, Lecorbusier's modernism. The focus of this study is “the Palazzina at Largo Spinelli” that shows on facade, more precisely, on both facades in front of the streets , huge ribbon windows all along that cuts horizontally the elevation, and create different geometrical tricks , drawing the facades in different ways. The goal is to analyze the geometrical proportion and compare it with Lecorbusier's mains architectures as Ville Stein and Ville Savoye, to determine a relationship between them that links that building to the modernism expression of early 30s and individuate any evolution and development of it in a relationship with roman modernism, evaluating how it's blends with it and lastly compare it with other contemporary roman example.
