From a constructive point of view, the walls of North-western Gaul, built at the end of the third century, have common characteristics that can be compared with the contemporary city wall of Aureliano in Rome (271-279 AD). The result of this comparison is that despite the fortifications of Gaul and the walls of Rome have a very different aspect (the decoration of the walls of Le Mans represents the most spectacular example of this difference), from the construction point of view, some common features can be observed. First of all, the propensity to reuse the materials, widespread in the foundations, in the cores in opus caementicium and in the external layers of all the city walls investigated. The reused material comes from pre-existing buildings which can be traced back to the Roman world. The reuse of structures, which presents many cases along the walls of Rome, seems more limited in Gaul, although the example of Tours, with the incorporation of the large amphitheatre, has significant common features, still in part to be investigated, with that of the Castrense Amphitheater in Rome.

Abstract
The reuse of structures, which presents many cases along the walls of Rome, seems more limited in Gaul, although the example of Tours, with the incorporation of the large amphitheatre, has significant common features, still in part to be investigated, with that of the Castrense Amphitheater in Rome.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
