As the documents analyzed in this paper testify, the covered writers make part of a network of ideas connecting mainly French and English literature with the Greek intelligentsia, and they consider themselves as part of a wider European cultural space. G. Theotokas’ Αργώ [Argo] (1936), Th. Petsales’ Ο προορισμός της Μαρίας Πάρνη [Maria Parni’s Destination] (1933), Το σταυροδρόμι (1934) [The Crossroad], Ο απόγονος [The Descendant] (1935), united under the title Γερές και αδύναμες γενεές [Strong and weak generations]; and Tasos Athanasiades’ Η χαρισάμενη εποχή (1948) [The Joyful Era], Μάρμω Πανθέου (1953) [Marmo Pantheou], Η κερκόπορτα (1961) [The Breach], united under the title Οι Πανθέοι [The Pantheoi], follow several generations of a family and feature a certain conception of time, that reaches for the roots in the past, while at the same time prepares the future. The paper focuses on the ways in which the rise and fall of the families, the antagonisms among their members and the changes in the generations are presented in the abovementioned novels.
