This paper presents a study on radial power flow carried on a local microgrid using MATPOWER. The microgrid consists of an unpredictable, stochastic solar energy source, storage and a dispatchable load (diesel generator) in order to manage the load. Radial power flow studies are different when compared to conventional power flow studies with regard to the techniques employed in solving for power flow parameters. The roles of storage, diesel generators and how they can be used to manage load under different operational scenarios are discussed. Two cases of different storage sizes and their subsequent impact in operations of the power system are discussed.

Abstract

This paper presents a study on radial power flow carried on a local microgrid using MATPOWER. The microgrid consists of an unpredictable, stochastic solar energy source, storage and a dispatchable load (diesel generator) in order to manage the load. Radial power flow studies are different when compared to conventional power flow studies with regard to the techniques employed in solving for power flow parameters. The roles of storage, diesel generators and how they can be used to manage load under different operational scenarios are discussed. Two cases of different storage sizes and their subsequent impact in operations of the power system are discussed.
