Law is supranational in its intent and significance, but not in its enforcement. The rights are universal; the methods of punishment are not. The essay reflects upon the deeper meaning of punishment starting from the volume Universality of Punishment, edited by Antonio Incampo and Wojciech Żełaniec. Political, normative and conceptual incoherence are still able to explain the universal significance of punishment when it is built around the absolute value of humanity.
