Un pavimento a mosaico dalle terme di Veio Macchiagrande

The excavations at Macchiagrande (Veii) – begun in 1996 and still on going – brought to light a large domus and the forum which faces a sacred area located between the square and a balneum (partially investigated between 1998 and 2004). The size and the strange distribution of this building do not allow us to establish if it has private or public purpose: the building consists of an open courtyard around which five long irregularly shaped rooms are arranged. Two section of a black and white mosaic floor have been uncovered in a large partially heated room, most likely used as calida-rium. The decorative pattern and the stratigraphic evidence suggest a chronology between middle 1st and middle 2nd c. CE. Notwithstanding its fragmentary preservation, this is the only mosaic floor found up to date in the Roman site of Macchiagrande.
