This article discusses the connections between "Di tanti palpiti", the entrance aria for the title role of Rossini's Tancredi, and some Italian folk songs which may have been based on it. It does so through a variety of sources, including periodicals, travelogues, letters, sheet music, and collections of folk song texts from the late ninenteenth and the early twentieth century.
