The Commodity Science Museum is part of the Museums Network of the Sapienza University of Rome ( Polo museale Sapienza-PmS). The Museums of PmS are associated with relevant research and teaching departments. The thematic areas in question are: Archeological, Classical and Contemporary Art cluster; Anthropology, Medical Sciences and Comparative Anatomy cluster; Earth Sciences cluster; Sciences and Technology cluster. There are 183 University Museums in Italy, and they represent a significant cultural resource, not only nationally, but also internationally. The Conference of the Rectors of Italian Universities (CRUI) initiated a systematic and structured set of activities in relation to University Museums and Collection, coordinated by a special commission set up in 1999. The Commodity Science Museum helps to trace the evolution of technological raw materials and instrumentation suitable to their manipulation, characterization and measurement in order to not only preserve and reassess the value as a cultural asset of scientific interest, but also as input for multiple processes production. The collection of Museum amount to a total of 6,000 specimens: minerals, metals, textile fibers, tobacco, fragrances, wood specimens, marine products, fuels, food and related products, medicinal plants, and others. Of particular interest is the collection of instruments for the pharmaceutical-chemical and physical analysis of goods and produce.
