Verses 167, 444 and 445 Sk., anonymously transmitted in Priscian’s De constructione (books xvii-xviii of the Ars), are generally ascribed to Ennius’ Annals. While it is certain that the first verse belongs to Ennius, as we gather from a passage of Cicero’s De divinatione, it is equally certain that the second does not, as it has proved to be Priscian’s own translation of the Homeric verse quoted by Apollonius Dyscolus in the same context (Synt. iii 43). As to verse 445 Sk., its resemblance to Enn. ann. 53 Sk., quoted by other Latin grammarians for the same syntactical peculiarity, could suggest that it is in fact a variant of the same verse attested in the tradition. That being said, it has to be acknowledged that despite their similarity the examples are not identical, and therefore the attribution of verse 445 Sk. to Ennius, omitted in Priscian’s tradition, remains a conjecture.

Abstract
That being said, it has to be acknowledged that despite their similarity the examples are not identical, and therefore the attribution of verse 445 Sk. to Ennius, omitted in Priscian’s tradition, remains a conjecture.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
