La società contro lo Stato. Note sull'antropologia politica di Pierre Clastres

The aim of this paper is to analyse the theme of political power as developed in the political anthropology of Pierre Clastres, especially in his influential book Society against the State. Can there be a society that is not divided into oppressors and oppressed, or that refuses coercive state apparatus? Clastres's thesis is that economic expropriation and political coercion are inconsistent with the character of tribal society. He offers examples of South American Indian groups that, although without hierarchical leadership, were both affluent and complex. In so doing he refutes the usual negative definition of tribal society and poses its order as a radical critique of our own Western state of power.

Questo saggio analizza il tema del potere politico così come sviluppato nell'antropologia politica di Pierre Clastres, specialmente nel suo libro "La società contro lo stato". Può esistere una società che non sia divisa in oppressori e oppressi, o che rifiuta di costituirsi in forma statale? La tesi di Clastres è che l'espropriazione economica e la coercizione politica non coincidono con il carattere della società tribale.
