A vision for the new river town

A multidisciplinary Team from the Department of Planning Design Technology of Architecture of Sapienza University of Rome has been involved from East China Normal University (ECNU) of Shanghai in the Sino-French-Italian International Workcamp 2016 on the issue "Urban and Village Renovation". The applied research project for the year 2016 was Xibin Town, Youxi City, Fujian Province. The proposal focuses the Vision (the idea of development) on three key words: • “new”, that is to have a “for change” approach; “river”, that is to recognize what we may call “genius loci”; “town”, that is to recognize the urban character of Xibin and its role in a broader context. So, the Concept has five goals: • to strengthen Xibin as the “town on the water” which hosts mainly urban functions, from residence to commerce to administration; to make only one system among the town and the villages; to improve the accessibility; to change the relationship with the river, from production to fruition too; to consolidate the population and to attract economic activities. The project strategy identifies two priority themes: “environment” that finds its focal items in two linear promenades (the Urban Promenade and the Green Promenade) and “urban life” that finds its focal items in two axes (the Urban Axis with the Civic Street and the Civic Center, l’Heritage Path).

Un Team multidisciplinare del Dipartimento di Pianificazione Design e Tecnologia dell'Architettura, PDTA della Sapienza Università di Roma, è stato coinvolto dalla East China Normal University (ECNU) di Shanghai nel Sino-French-Italian International Workcamp 2016 sul tema "Urban and Village Renovation". Il lavoro per il Workcamp, svolto in interazione con il team della ECNU di Shanghai, ha avuto come area di applicazione Xibin Town, nella Youxi City, provincia di Fujian. La proposta presentata ha basato la visione di sviluppo su tre parole chiave: “nuovo”, il che equivale a dire che l’approccio è di promozione del cambiamento; “fiume”, il che equivale a riconoscere il genius loci; “città”, il che equivale a riconoscere il ruolo urbano di Xibin all’interno di un contesto più ampio. Di qui gli obiettivi del concept (rafforzare il ruolo di Xibin come città sull’acqua; mettere a sistema le relazioni tra la città e i suoi villaggi; migliorare l’accessibilità; re-inventare il rapporto della città con il suo fiume dalla produzione alla fruizione; consolidare la popolazione e attrarre attività economiche). La strategia progettuale ha individuato, a tal fine, due temi prioritari: l’ambiente (l’Urban Promenade, la Green Promenade) e la “vita urbana” (l’Urban Axis con la Civic Street e il Civic Center, l’Heritage Path).
