International research on parenting and childdevelopment can advance our understanding of similaritiesand differences in how parenting is related to children’sdevelopment across countries. Challenges to conductinginternational research include operationalizing culture,disentangling effects within and between countries, andbalancing emic and etic perspectives. Benefits of interna-tional research include testing whether findings regardingparenting and child development replicate across diversesamples, incorporating cultural and contextual diversity tofoster more inclusive and representative research samplesand investigators than has typically occurred, and under-standing how children develop in proximal parenting andfamily and distal international contexts.
