In this paper, we study the MBMM model (Mitchell et al., 2013), recently proposed in the literature for modeling the mortality risk. Compared to the best known and most widely used model LC (Lee, Carter, 1992) and its subsequent variants, this model starts from different assumptions about the dynamics of the mortality rates and it achieves better results in terms of fitting and forecasting. The authors of the model express the logarithm of the time variation factor of the central death rate for every age and time, rather than the logarithm of its absolute level, as a linear transformation of a given temporal mortality index and they assume for the latter a Normal Inverse Gaussian distribution (NIG) which, in thickness of the tails and kurtosis, well fits the empirical evidence. In this paper, we examine in detail the above-mentioned characteristics. We illustrate the logical-mathematical procedure of fitting and forecasting underlying the model and we also show the mathematical and computational aspects for its application.
