Within a frame of comparative literature, this article presents several connections between narrative texts in various languages, in order to reflect on the concepts of identity and universality in ancient and medieval literatures. Focusing on the role of Arabic and Persian texts in the making of a common Eurasian ‘library’, and reflecting also on the sapiential nature of ‘stories’ and ‘tales’, the article proposes a genealogy that goes from the traditional narratives to modern children’s literature.

Abstract

Within a frame of comparative literature, this article presents several connections between narrative texts in various languages, in order to reflect on the concepts of identity and universality in ancient and medieval literatures. Focusing on the role of Arabic and Persian texts in the making of a common Eurasian ‘library’, and reflecting also on the sapiential nature of ‘stories’ and ‘tales’, the article proposes a genealogy that goes from the traditional narratives to modern children’s literature.
