The paper wants to recall the origin of the project Tabula Imperii Romani, which is due to O. G. S. Crawford; he proposed to draw an archaeological map of the world Romans ruled on 200 A. C. joined to a synthetic text. As basic cartography it was chosen the International Map of the World, subdivided in sheets at 1:1.000.000. Since 1928 things changed and the European initiative had ups and downs, but many technical and diplomatic problems were solved; since a few years the cultural enterprise has experimented new cartographic methods. Twenty-nine volumes have been published so far (some reviewed).
