Abstract
Among the countless beauties of the Syrian cultural heritage, the Khabur plain region in north-eastern Syria represents a privileged territory, dotted with a dense network of ancient settlements of great historical importance. Tell Leilan, built along the banks of the Wadi Jarrah, with a lower city surrounded by imposing walls extending over 90 hectares, and an acropolis, still inhabited by the local population, extended to 15 hectares, is one of the most relevant in this area. Known by the name of Shekna, in the 3rd millennium BC, the settlement was chosen by Shamshi-Adad, ruler, between the 19th and 18th centuries. BC to establish his capital with the new name of Shubat-Enlil. Since 1978, an archaeological mission of the Yale University, led by prof. Harvey Weiss, has investigated the site finding impressive monumental buildings and a large number of tablets, including five international treaties of great historical relevance.
