The article focuses on the development of tourism in Libya since 1914 at the outbreak of World War II. It reconstructs tourist flows to Libya and tourist practices (cruises, bus and car trips and more. It also analyzes the tourist guides published by the colonial TCI that appear as a tool of colonial propaganda, acculturation, representation of the overseas territories aimed at their knowledge and the creation of a colonial imagination for the Italians. In fact the article highlights the propaganda value of tourism for fascism. For Fascist regime a tourist organization for the colonies had a double value, both nationally and internationally: in particular, the fascist model tried to offer a modern image of “Italy outside of Italy”. The articles has an interdisciplinary character (political history, cultural history, social sciences) and is accompanied by a photographic appendix. It can be considered a pioneering contribution to the study of tourism in the Italian colonies and the colonialist phenomenon in general given the scarcity of work in the field and the use of unpublished archival sources.
