Benedetto XV e l'inutile strage. Impegno umanitario e progetti di pace di un pontefice nell'Europa della Grande Guerra

Since his first public speech, Benedict XV began his action for peace, in an attempt to stop the hostilities and to convince the great powers to resolve the issues on the table through dialogue and negotiation. The appeals fell on deaf ears and it soon became clear that the duration of the conflict would not be short. From that moment on the Pope's action was aimed at limiting the suffering of civilians but also of prisoners of war by acting in the years of conflict with effective impartiality and with the sole aim of silencing weapons.

Fin dal suo primo discorso pubblico Benedetto XV diede inizio alla sua azione per la pace, nel tentativo di far cessare le ostilità e di convincendo le grandi potenze a risolvere le questioni sul tappeto attraverso il dialogo e il negoziato. Gli appelli caddero nel vuoto e presto fu chiaro che la durata del conflitto non sarebbe stata breve. Da quel momento in poi l’azione del Pontefice fu rivolta a limitare le sofferenze dei civili e dei prigionieri di guerra agendo negli anni del conflitto con imparzialità effettiva e con il solo obiettivo di far tacere le armi.
