The research addresses the rehabilitation of Italian modernist residential neighborhoods, considering the complex situation of urban sectors which display a remarkable architectural quality while suffering from aging and the change in the use of its open areas, accumulated over half a century or more of history. The issues at stake are therefore not only connected to the conservation of the architecture: they include the need to consider the presence of characteristic forms of urban vitality which are deeply rooted in the neighborhoods. Conventional urban design methods are hardly capable of dealing with this “hidden” dimension, and the research proposes a tentative approach for the achievement of a greater inclusiveness in the design process. The work has been carried out using four case studies in Rome: two “Borgate” built just before World War II, Trullo and Primavalle, and two mid-income residential neighborhoods from the early 1960’s, Villaggio Olimpico and Decima.

Abstract
The work has been carried out using four case studies in Rome: two “Borgate” built just before World War II, Trullo and Primavalle, and two mid-income residential neighborhoods from the early 1960’s, Villaggio Olimpico and Decima.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
