We review the puzzles of the standard Big Bang model and cosmic inflation as their possible solutions. The relation between inflation and the spectra of the cosmological perturbations is emphasized. In particular we focus on the local reconstruction of the shape of the inflationary potential from observations and the consequences of a direct detection of cosmological gravitational waves, exploring different correlation levels between the spectral index n(s) and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r of the primordial perturbations.
