Ralf Dahrendorf. Democrazia, unione europea e stati-nazione

There is no more dynamic and debated political concept than democracy. This essay has attempted to define the specific vision of the concept from the different perspective of Ralf Dahrendorf. Ensure social change, the limits to political power and popular sovereignty are three key elements of that definition. Subsequently, keeping in mind that, this paper analyze the democratic legitimacy of the EU institutions and the circuit Parliament, Council and Commission. The change of the spatial context, caused by globalisation and the forces that are opposed to it has produced, according to Dahrendorf, the crisis of democratic formula, whose operation was effective if spatially operating in the context of the nation-state, as to induce him to assume the centrality of the relationship "between the crisis of democracy and the crisis of the nation-state".
