This article focuses on the beginning and development of the translations into Latin of Greek Christian texts during the first centuries. The work of Jerome and Rufinus as Origen's translators is a crucial moment in this process, which coincides with the cultural awakeining promoted in the West by the knowledge of Origen and the spread of monastic ideals. Jerome translates more literally, while Rufinus tends to be more paraphrastic. There are two reasons for this liberty. First, Rufinus writes in a historical context that requires an overall defense of Origen. Moreover, his knowledge of Origen is more mature than that of Jerome and by virtue of familiarity with the spirit of Origen he takes greater freedom on the litteral level.
