The article presents a research study on bilingual adults' perception of structural and sociolinguistic features of Italian language, compared to Italian monolinguals, matched for age, gender, socio-cultural and professional characteristics. The study also explored the relation between the above perception and some personality traits, such as the strenght of the ego in relation to the other, as measured by a specific personality test, the 9-AP (Candilera, 1995, 2000). Results show that the bilingual group has a sharper awareness of the characteristics of the Italian language and a stronger representation of both self and the other, with respect to the monolingual group.
