The current urban dynamics promote a reflection on urban reuse as a condition of environmental, economic and social opportunity as well as the need for a creative development of the city. The enhancement of existing buildings through reuse acts as as a field of experimentation and social innovation for Italian and European cities, which, increasingly, change their relationship with public spaces and local stakeholders through solutions aiming at creating territorial development and participation.The enhancement of existing buildings through reuse acts as as a field of experimentation and social innovation for Italian and European cities, which, increasingly, change their relationship with public spaces and local stakeholders through Reuse is considered a strategy to restore form and function to obsolete, degraded, spaces, but also to create different meanings and promote a new identity. The contribution focuses on the theme of reuse and enhancement of industrial heritage, characterized by contrasting aspects, recalling the dichotomy between symbolic and economic values, including the consideration of the components of the soil materials and assessment of historical and cultural aspects. The analysis of some good practices in Rome focuses on the one hand on an interpretation of industrial heritage as a territorial basis of a specific collective identity, and the other hand as the set of renewal endogenous potentialities. The reuse even the temporary reuse of degraded areas of the city can cause unexpected uses that often catalyze economic and social redevelopment processes.

Le dinamiche urbane attuali sollecitano una riflessione sul tema del riuso, come condizione di opportunità in chiave di sostenibilità ambientale, economica e sociale ma anche come possibilità per uno sviluppo creativo della città. La valorizzazione delpatrimonio edilizio esistente attraverso il riuso rappresenta uno dei principali settori disperimentazione e d’innovazione per città italiane ed europee, che, in misura crescente, modificano il loro rapporto con spazi pubblici e stakeholder locali proponendosoluzioni che creano sviluppo e partecipazione sui territori. Il riuso è considerato unastrategia per ridare forma e funzione a spazi obsoleti, degradati, ma anche per crearediversi significati e promuovere una nuova identità. Il contributo, focalizza l’attenzione sul tema del riutilizzo e valorizzazione del patrimonio industriale, caratterizzato da aspetti contrastanti, che richiamano la dicotomia tra valore simbolico e valore economico, tra la considerazione delle componenti materiali del suolo e la valutazione degli aspetti storico-culturali. L’analisi di alcune esperienze realizzate a Roma pone l’attenzione da un lato su un’interpretazione del patrimonio industriale, come fondamento territoriale di una specifica identità collettiva e dall’altro come l’insieme delle potenzialità endogene dello sviluppo. Il riuso anche temporaneo di parti di città che versano in situazioni di degrado può generare usi inaspettati che spesso catalizzano processi di ripresa economica e sociale.
