The paper focuses on the conservation/innovation of our architectural artefacts, especially the much sought-after architectural and functional compatibility dictated by the need to always consider pre-existing elements. In fact, the concept of compatibility involves actions aimed at uniting several pre-existing and ‘new’ elements without creating a negative fallout. In particular, the paper analyses the problem of important historical buildings when they are either abandoned or used for other different purposes, above all currently dilapidated architectural heritage, i.e., theatres, cinemas and concert halls. After presenting several Italian and international restoration projects, the paper illustrates the problems associated with the functional recovery of these buildings, upgrading projects which often completely change their physical and formal appearance. In fact, it is crucial to ensure that the chosen function is ‘culturally’ compatible with the artefact in question and does not involve changing the ‘heritage’. The aim of the study is to identify guidelines and operating procedures for a recovery of such structures.
Il contributo intende focalizzare l’attenzione su quel continuo processo conservazione/innovazione che caratterizza il nostro patrimonio storico, sempre alla ricerca di una ‘compatibilità’ architettonica e funzionale in grado di far convivere entità diverse, preesistenza e ‘nuovo’ inserimento, senza produrre esiti negativi. Nello specifico, si analizzano le problematiche legate all’abbandono e alle contrastanti trasformazioni d’uso che interessano alcune grandi strutture architettoniche attualmente in un momento di grave sofferenza, vale a dire teatri, cinema e sale da musica. Inoltre, attraverso la presentazione di alcune esperienze, italiane e internazionali, si vogliono individuare le diverse tematiche che caratterizzano il recupero e il restauro di tali organismi; tra tutte le questioni emerge quella connessa agli aggiornamenti funzionali che spesso comportano l’alterazione del bene e non sono ‘compatibili’ con l’oggetto dell’intervento.
