On March 3, 1878 was signed the peace of Santo Stefano at the end of the Russo-Turkish War, which caused a political crisis, financial and military Ottoman Empire. Constantinople in those years was aided by some major European powers that were aimed at preserving the international balance. The Santo Stefano Treaty, however, disappointed several Western powers, primarily the Austria-Hungary, and thanks to the leadership from Germany was organized the Congress of Berlin (1878). The Ottoman Empire was able to limit the territorial losses than decided in Santo Stefano. That the international landscape that frames the study that tries to reconstruct the events of the Ottoman society on the eve of the First World War.
Il 3 marzo 1878 fu siglata la pace di Santo Stefano al termine della guerra russo-turca che causò una lunga crisi politica, finanziaria e militare all’Impero ottomano. Costantinopoli in quegli anni fu aiutata da alcune grandi potenze europee che mirarono a preservare l’equilibrio internazionale. Il trattato di Santo Stefano, però, deluse diverse potenze occidentali, in primis l’Austria-Ungheria e grazie alla leadership della Germania fu organizzato il Congresso di Berlino (1878). L’Impero ottomano riuscì a limitare le perdite territoriali rispetto a quanto deciso a Santo Stefano. Questo il panorama internazionale che fa da cornice allo studio, che prova a ricostruire le vicende della società ottomana alla vigilia della Prima guerra mondiale.
