Topical administration of Isoproterenol 4-5% in one or in both eyes of a glaucomatous patient reduces the intraocular pressure, but produces a reactive systemic hypotension and a marked tachycardia. Pre-treatment with oral Propranolol at dose of 10 mg. two hours before, inhibits such a side-effects but not the ocular hypotensive power of Isoproterenol itself in both eyes administered. Some considerations about the different effect of such a pharmacological combination from a topical and systemic viewpoint are advanced.
