An analysis is presented of a couple therapy in which the woman was an alcoholic. The relational significance of the symptom is discussed and the main patterns of communication between the partners are analysed. Subsequently, 'strategy' of the treatment is outlined; it was aimed at the disappearance of the symptomatic behavior through a change of the couple's relations. The homeostatic reactions of the system before achievement of the therapeutic objective are stressed. A transcription of the most significant parts of the therapeutic sessions is included.
