In this paper the author underlines the importance of Franco Basaglia’s work in all the history of Italian psychiatric reform. The closure of the mental hospitals and asylums, the development of the territory mental health care and the approval of the law (named 180) regulating these new perspectives are the main issues linked to Franco Basaglia and the movement created by him and around him (named Democratic Psychiatry). The steps of this very important process for the Italian psychiatry are described as well as the perspectives for the future and the problems not yet accomplished.
