Until recent years, the knowledge that the Nahua of the Sierra of Puebla had of their pre-Hispanic and colonial past was vague and partial, as well as essentially based on local traditions, so that the awareness of their links with the great Nahuatl civilizations of the central plateau was fragmentary and uncertain, if not completely absent. The growing influence of the outside world, consisting of education, social mobility, archaeological and handicraft promotion, as well as the interaction with administrators and government officials, scholars, priests, and tourists, has recently changed this awareness, as well as the Nahua’s capacity to independently manage the definition of their cultural identity. Through some ethnographic examples, I will try to illustrate the processes through which many aspects of the "Aztec culture" are recovered by the indigenous population and its closest partners, selecting, interpreting, adapting and re-shaping them. I will conclude by reflecting on the motivations, strategies and objectives that inspire the different protagonists of the phenomenon.

Abstract
I will conclude by reflecting on the motivations, strategies and objectives that inspire the different protagonists of the phenomenon.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
