Abstract
A common source of Dante's De vulgari eloquentia and of Varchi, Hercolano is identified in Book IX of Aristotles's De historia animalium. It is argued that the elaboration of Aristotle's heritage allowed the two Italian writers to formulate a genuine 'naturalistic' approach to both human and animal language that represented an original guideline of linguistic theory in the Italian tradition.File allegati a questo prodotto
