The problem of testing different production strategies has been studied in relation to reserves selection. The case study presented concerns an underground rock salt mine in Sicily with different product lines and variable ore characteristics. A geostatistical block model of the deposit was constructed on the basis of the spatial distributions of the interrelated physical and chemical parameters of colour and grades that ultimately determined the type of endproduct. Mine operations according to different selection strategies were simulated using the model and taking account of both technical and commercial constraints. The results are compared and commented.

Abstract

The problem of testing different production strategies has been studied in relation to reserves selection. The case study presented concerns an underground rock salt mine in Sicily with different product lines and variable ore characteristics. A geostatistical block model of the deposit was constructed on the basis of the spatial distributions of the interrelated physical and chemical parameters of colour and grades that ultimately determined the type of endproduct. Mine operations according to different selection strategies were simulated using the model and taking account of both technical and commercial constraints. The results are compared and commented.
