This essay reconstructs the political journey of Lorenzo Natali, leader of the Christian Democrats in Abruzzo and subsequently Vice-president of the European Commission from 1977 to 1989. In his youth he was involved in activities to help the poor set up by La Pira, Mayor of Florence, and then took part in the resistance movement against Nazism. He became Christian Democrat leader at the regional level. Member of the Parliament, Under-Secretary of State and Minister in various governments from the mid-fifties to the seventies, his experience represents an original and personal synthesis between the Christian faith and political commitment, and his public activity was seen as working for the benefit of his native land, his nation, Europe and even some non-European countries holding relations with the EEC. In this perspective, his profile, whilst secondary within the context of the Christian Democrats, is evidence of a personal and generational journey that left nothing to chance, neither in terms of party nor of administrative and governmental activity. Defeated and marginalised in his region, he was a figure of some significance during the enlargement of the EEC to 12 countries.
